In 1226, the King of England had to write a letter asking for three pounds of sugar. Six hundred years later, a laborer in Manchester was eating ninety pounds of it a year. In between lies one of the largest movements of people and money in human history, and most of the work was done by people taken from Africa against their will.
This documentary for sleep tells the history of sugar, from a giant grass in New Guinea to the cube in your cup: how India first made sugar crystals, how Persia and the Arab world refined them, why medieval Europe sold sugar as a spice and a medicine, the Atlantic islands and the plantations of Brazil and the Caribbean, the boycott and the revolution in Haiti that helped end slavery, the sugar beet, the indentured workers who went to Mauritius, Trinidad, Guyana and Fiji, and what science has learned about sugar since. Where historians disagree, we say so.
Chapters:
Explore the complex sugar history that spans from ancient New Guinea to the modern cube in your cup. Understand the global forces that shaped the sweetest crop in human history.
This documentary for sleep follows the evidence thread by thread: how India first made sugar crystals, how Persia and the Arab world refined them, and why medieval Europe treated the substance as a medicine. We trace the rise of sugar plantations in Brazil and the Caribbean, examining the massive movement of people and money that defined the era.
We also look at the darker side of this industry, detailing the impact of the atlantic slave trade and the subsequent revolution in Haiti that helped end forced labor. The journey continues to the industrialization of the sugar beet in Europe and the indentured workers who traveled to Mauritius, Guyana, and Fiji. We clearly separate historical fact from myth, plainly stating where historians still disagree.
