🎸 Did MTV Kill Rock Music? - A 90's Girl's Response to Billy Corgan

🎸 Okay, the thumbnail might be a little disingenuous, because I'm not really here to "challenge" Billy Corgan. At the same time, though, I'm not here to fully agree with him. Again, I don't like to wade in on current events (even though he made this statement like 6 months ago, but whatever). However, as someone who's long admired Billy Corgan for his music, commentary, and the fact that he has a vocabulary that would blow me outta the water if we ever had a one-on-one debate, his statement that rock music was deliberately killed by the likes of MTV really grabbed me. We all know the feeling. We're driving in our car with the radio on, and it's just a succession of hip hop, rap, electronic dance tracks, and the same bouncy mass-appeal formulaic music that has been dominating the airwaves since at least 2000. We sit there in traffic thinking; "Man, I wish someone would make some 'real' music again with guitars and drums and stuff." But here's the thing, if you lived in the 1990s like I did, you were probably thinking the same about the previous generation of music, wishing they'd put some hair metal back on instead of grunge or boy bands or anything else like that. I'm a grunge girl down to an atomic level, don't judge. So, in this essay, I want to respond to Billy's statement from the perspective of a teenager in the 1990s.
