What if the world around us is not as solid as it appears? In Episode 85 of غور و فکر (Ghor o Fikr), Dr. Muhammad Sufyan explores Quantum Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory, the Quran, Al-Ghayb (the unseen), science, philosophy, and belief in God through one of the deepest questions we can ask: What is reality actually made of? You touch a table and feel something solid. You walk on the ground, hold your phone, look at the stars, and naturally assume that the universe is made of solid matter. But when physics takes us deep into the quantum world, our everyday picture of reality begins to change. Modern physics describes fundamental particles not simply as tiny solid balls, but within a framework of quantum fields. Electrons, photons and other elementary particles are described through quantum field theory, while electromagnetic interactions and the Pauli Exclusion Principle help explain important aspects of the structure and stability of matter. So why does your hand stop when you press it against a table? Why does matter feel solid if its microscopic structure is so different from what our everyday senses suggest? And if some of the deepest structures described by modern physics are invisible to our senses, can this give us a new perspective on the Quranic concept of الغيب — Al-Ghayb, the unseen? This episode explores these questions through the lens of modern physics while reflecting on Quranic concepts including Al-Ghayb, Qadar (divine measure), Mizan (balance), and the temporary nature of worldly life. Quranic Verses Discussed Surah Al-Baqarah 2:3 — Belief in the unseen (Al-Ghayb) Surah Al-Hadid 57:20 — The temporary and deceptive nature of worldly life Surah Al-Qamar 54:49 — Everything created according to a measure Surah Fatir 35:41 — Allah sustaining the heavens and the Earth The episode then moves from physics toward a deeper philosophical question: If our current understanding of the physical world is described in terms of quantum fields and fundamental laws, why do those fields and laws exist in the first place? Science can investigate how the universe behaves and develop increasingly powerful models of physical reality. But questions about ultimate meaning, purpose, and why anything exists at all also take us into the domains of philosophy and theology. This episode does not claim that quantum physics scientifically proves a particular theological interpretation. Instead, it invites us to think deeply about whether discoveries in modern physics can provide new intellectual perspectives on concepts that the Quran has discussed for centuries. The Quran repeatedly calls human beings toward تدبر (Tadabbur) and reflection—to look beyond the surface and think deeply about the signs of creation. And perhaps the greatest lesson is humility.
