Padam Shri Shyam Sharma, Bihar
Born on 8th February 1941 in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, Padam Shri Shyam Sharma, Bihar is one of India’s foremost print artists, authors, and poets whose artistic journey bridges craftsmanship, philosophy, and visual poetry. His creative journey formally began in 1966 when he joined the College of Arts and Crafts, Patna, as a lecturer. Over the years, his dedication and vision led him to become the Head of the Department of Printmaking and eventually the Principal of the institution. Through his teaching, writings, and practice, Sharma shaped a generation of artists, nurturing printmaking as both an expressive and intellectual medium.
Sharma’s works have been exhibited across India and abroad, earning him recognition for their refined aesthetic, layered symbolism, and spiritual undertones. His deep engagement with the philosophy of image-making is also reflected in his literary works—Safed Sanp, Syah, Dekha Dekhi Baat, Gandhi Aur Suktiyan, Kashth Chhapa Kala, and Chitrakala aur Bihar—which reveal his nuanced understanding of art, life, and language.
He has served as a member of the General Council of Lalit Kala Akademi and as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi, contributing significantly to the discourse of modern Indian art.
A recipient of the Padma Shri and the National Award by Lalit Kala Akademi, Sharma continues to be celebrated for his mastery in printmaking and his poetic vision that transcends the boundaries between word and image—embodying a timeless dialogue between tradition, technique, and thought.
