AI news started to feel like a fire hose. Every week there's a new tool everyone swears will change everything, and by the time I've put a few hours into one, it's apparently already outdated. So I built a bot to filter it for me.
This is Winston, my first app. Every Monday morning he texts me up to three AI news stories. They're not the biggest headlines. They're the ones that could actually make my work easier. I'm a statistician, not a developer, but I built this with Claude Code in about a week, in small pockets of free time around kids and a full-time job.
A story only makes the cut if it improves at least one of these four things without making another one much worse:
Cost
Accuracy (classifying data, in my case)
Speed
Environmental impact/resource use
In this video:
Why I had Claude Code ask me questions before it made a plan, and the ones that showed me what I hadn't thought through
Setting up Telegram for the first time
The 404 that cost me an hour: Claude Code kept telling me everything was live, and the problem was one mistaken Vercel setting
The "success" message that never reached my phone, and the copy-paste mistake hiding inside an environment variable I couldn't see
Why I didn't give up this time when I hit a problem
Tools I used: Claude Code, Vercel, Telegram
Next, I want to listen to these stories instead of reading them and turn Winston into a custom podcast I can play on the go. I don't know yet if that's a couple of hours or another whole week. I'll find out in the next video!
