Today's lesson is bar graphs, where each bar grows up from the zero line and the number at its top is the answer.
Every bar climbs from the baseline, so its height is the answer: 2, 4, 6 and 8 votes side by side
Carry the top of a bar straight across to the scale: Adventure 7, Cartoons 5, Sports 3
A scale can count by 1, 2, 5 or 10; by ones would take 21 lines, so one board counts 0, 5, 10, 15, 20
One bar at 10 against a bar at 6 is 4 more, measured between their two tops
Read every bar and add them all: 4, 8, 6 and 10 books make 28
On two boards with identical ink, the Cats bar is 3 votes on a ones scale and 15 on a fives scale
Pupils finish able to read a bar against any scale and to answer how many more questions by comparing tops, not ink.
