Before wolves ruled the American wilderness, North America experimented with predators that have no real equivalent today. Around 10 million years ago, the prehistoric West was changing. Grasslands were expanding, horses were diversifying, camelids still lived in their continent of origin, rhinoceroses crossed the plains and elephant relatives reshaped the vegetation. Following them were hunters built around completely different solutions. Epicyon haydeni was one of the largest dogs ever known. Its massive skull and reinforced teeth allowed it to process bone, but studies of borophagine limbs suggest these giant canids were not simply oversized wolves built for endless pursuit. Their anatomy combined running adaptations with unusually powerful forelimbs, creating a predatory style unlike that of any living canid. Then there was Barbourofelis fricki. It looked like a saber-toothed cat, but it belonged to a completely different lineage. Recent biomechanical research suggests its heavily reinforced skull could tolerate stresses differently from Smilodon, raising the possibility that not every saber-toothed predator killed in exactly the same way. Across the same landscape, smaller canids pursued lighter prey, large carnivores competed over carcasses, and horses, camelids, rhinoceroses and gomphotheres continually changed the risks and opportunities available to every hunter. The real weapon of this prehistoric Wild West was not just teeth or claws. It was the landscape itself. As vegetation opened, some ambush routes disappeared while new opportunities appeared for faster hunters. Evolution was not producing one perfect predator. It was testing several answers at the same time. This documentary enters an American West that existed millions of years before cowboys, wolves or the famous Ice Age predators.
