2. Justice Means Fairness So what does justice look like in business? One word is fairness. Fairness doesn't necessarily mean treating everyone the same. Sometimes fairness means recognizing that people have different responsibilities, different circumstances, and different levels of performance. A good leader understands the difference between equality and equity. But whatever system you use, it should be understandable, consistent, and principled. Employees should know what is expected. Compensation should be handled honestly. Promotions should not simply go to someone’s friend. Opportunities should not be based on favoritism. Discipline should not depend on whether you personally like the person. A leader cannot have one standard for the person they like and another standard for the person they don’t like. That’s not justice. That’s favoritism. And favoritism destroys trust. Think about the workplace. Imagine two employees make the same mistake. One is your friend. The other isn’t. If you discipline one and excuse the other, you may still be the boss—but you have lost moral authority. People are always watching leadership. They may not say anything. They may smile in the meeting. They may keep doing their job. But they know. And once people believe leadership is unfair, trust begins to disappear. And once trust disappears, the organization begins to suffer. Justice builds trust.
