Have you ever been told that custom orthotics are just a "crutch" — that if you wear them, your feet will become weaker, lazier, or permanently dependent on support? It is one of the most common concerns patients raise in our office, and it deserves a clear, honest answer.
In this video, Dr. Drew Taft, podiatrist at Foot & Ankle Associates of Southern New Hampshire, explains what custom orthotics are designed to do, what they do not do, and why the answer is not simply “yes” or “no.” A properly prescribed orthotic can reduce stress on painful tissues, improve pressure distribution, and support the foot while it heals. But it is not magic, it is not the right choice for everyone, and it should never replace an appropriate strengthening and rehabilitation plan when one is needed.
In this video, you will learn:
•
Whether orthotics actually weaken your foot muscles.
•
The difference between supportive care, dependency, and deconditioning.
•
Why a prescription orthotic is different from a soft, mass-market insole.
•
When orthotics can be a temporary bridge during recovery and when they may be longer-term support.
•
Which patients often benefit from an individualized biomechanical evaluation.
•
Why wearing the wrong orthotic, in the wrong shoe, can create discomfort rather than relief.
•
How orthotics, footwear, and foot-strengthening work together rather than compete with one another.
Dr. Taft also explains why the best question is not “Do I need orthotics forever?” but rather “What is placing abnormal stress on my foot, and what is the most appropriate plan for me right now?”
