Two nights, the same comedian, the same act. Tuesday 6 July 1976: Rodney Dangerfield, fifty-four, loses his place on The Tonight Show, runs dry on the couch, and Johnny Carson has to hand him a topic. Wednesday 30 May 1979: the same man, the same jokes, and Carson ends up face down on his own desk. So what changed? We counted the laughs on both tapes. Standing up, the two nights are identical: about four laughs a minute. On the couch, 2.5 a minute in 1976 against 3.4 in 1979. Our argument: the difference is the man at the desk, and what he learned about when to stop helping. How we counted: a pause of 2.5 seconds or more after a line, measured on a transcript of each tape.
