Drummer Franklin Vanderbilt spent 15 years playing with Lenny Kravitz, worked with Robby Krieger of The Doors, and has shared stages and studios with everyone from Chaka Khan to Stevie Wonder. Now he's stepping out front with his debut album Inside My Silence — an album he had to live 20 years to write. In this episode of The Inner Circle On Air, he joins Mike in the studio to talk creative ownership, the LOCK Theory, staying authentic when everything is going artificial, and the real reason it took two decades to make his first record.
He also tells the story of a childhood that gave him no choice but drums — crawling to his mother's pots and pans before his father bought him his first orange Ludwig kit — and the moment his godfather looked at him and said, "You're a rock drummer, not a jazz drummer. Get in the car."
Topics covered: playing with Lenny Kravitz, Robby Krieger and The Doors, Chaka Khan, Stanley Clarke, Stevie Wonder · the LOCK Theory (Listening, Observing, Comprehension, Knowledge) · ownership as the name of the game in music · the making of Inside My Silence with producer Alan Parsons and a guest list of legends · the album photo shoot with iconic rock photographer Henry Diltz on LA's 6th Street Bridge · the "Thank God for Rock and Roll" brand · why AI can't replace the human soul · and a full-circle return to Chicago to perform on WGN.
