Today we broke in the Losi 8ight RTR with VP 20% Nitro 9% oil. Before performing the break in, I ran 2 tanks at idle with a rich mixture. During the break in, it will be messy because you want a rich running car to assure lubrication. Please note, there are many different ways to break in a nitro engine. The main thing to remember is proper lubrication (rich), always make sure your engine is at BDC (Bottom Dead Center) after shutting off your engine, and make sure to take your time. Below are the steps recommended by Dynamite:
Tank 1: Drive your vehicle on a large, flat, paved surface. Over a 2-second time span, gently pull the throttle trigger to 1/4 throttle and back again to idle. Accelerate and decelerate as smoothly as you can.
Tank 2: Drive your vehicle on a large, flat, paved surface. Over a 2-second time span gently pull the throttle trigger to 1/2 throttle and back again to idle. Accelerate and decelerate as smoothly as you can. Rotate the flywheel so that the piston is at bottom dead center (BDC). Let the engine cool for 15 minutes.
Tank 3: Drive your vehicle on a large, flat, paved surface. Over a 3-second time span gently pull the throttle trigger to 1/2 throttle and back again to idle. Accelerate and decelerate as smoothly as you can. Rotate the flywheel so that the piston is at bottom dead center (BDC). Let the engine cool for 15 minutes.
Tank 4: Drive your vehicle on a large, flat, paved surface. Over a 3-second time span gently pull the throttle trigger to 3/4 throttle and back again to idle. Accelerate and decelerate as smoothly as you can. Rotate the flywheel so that the piston is at bottom dead center (BDC). Let the engine cool for 15 minutes.
Tank 5: Drive your vehicle on a large, flat, paved surface. Over a 3-second time span gently pull the throttle trigger to full throttle and back again to idle. Accelerate and decelerate as smoothly as you can.
Tank 6: Clean and reoil your air filter before you proceed. During the sixth tank of fuel, you can run your vehicle on smooth flat surfaces and off-road dirt as well. The engine can now begin to be tuned for general performance use.
