In the unforgiving waters of Alaska, every emergency can become a fight for survival. In this real-life documentary, the US Coast Guard faces dangerous weather, life-threatening medical emergencies and rescue missions where one mistake could put everyone at risk.
When 63-year-old Wilbur suffers cardiac arrest, rescuers battle dense fog and freezing rain to reach him. After hours of CPR, his heart repeatedly stops during a desperate helicopter flight to hospital. The crew refuses to give up, fighting to keep him alive until they reach medical help. Against the odds, Wilbur survives and eventually returns home to his family.
The danger continues when a 70-foot fishing vessel begins taking on water in rough seas. A rescue swimmer is lowered onto the boat, but the line breaks during the operation. With strong winds and towering waves complicating the mission, the crew must find a way to deliver an emergency pump and bring their swimmer safely back aboard the helicopter.
Later, the Coast Guard searches a remote Alaskan island for a missing fisherman. Using infrared technology, the crew locates him stranded on a beach and helps him recover his damaged boat. His dog disappears during the rescue, adding another challenge to an already difficult night.
From desperate medical evacuations to dangerous maritime rescues, this documentary shows what it takes to save lives in Alaska’s harsh wilderness. It also pays tribute to rescue swimmer Null Hutton, whose 22-year Coast Guard career was dedicated to helping others.
Watch these real-life Coast Guard rescue operations and see how teamwork, courage and determination can make the difference between life and death.
