In this patient testimonial, a man in his mid-30s shares his experience after taking finasteride for approximately seven years without apparent side effects, then developing severe and persistent symptoms after discontinuing the medication.
He explains that he originally began taking Propecia in his 20s and remained on the medication for years. After deciding that maintaining his hair was no longer important enough to continue treatment, he stopped taking finasteride. Within approximately two weeks, he says he began feeling severely unwell.
At first, he believed his symptoms might be related to dental procedures and other medications he had recently taken. However, despite medical testing and an emergency room evaluation showing no obvious explanation, his condition continued to deteriorate.
In his testimony, he describes:
• Severe insomnia and repeated nights of being unable to sleep.
• A profound loss of appetite and difficulty forcing himself to eat.
• Constant pacing and an inability to relax or sit still comfortably.
• Episodes of waking with his heart pounding, night sweats, and intense physical distress.
• Testicular pain and other sexual symptoms that developed alongside his neurological and physical symptoms.
• Nausea, headaches, unusual neurological sensations, body aches, and joint cracking.
• Becoming unable to work and taking several weeks away from his job while trying to recover.
He says one of the most frightening aspects of the experience was not understanding why so many problems were appearing at once. While searching for answers, he came across Post-Finasteride Syndrome and began reading about reports of neurological, physical, and sexual symptoms occurring after discontinuation. He describes that moment as finally feeling like he had found an explanation for what was happening to him.
At approximately three months off finasteride, he reports that some symptoms have improved. His sexual side effects had resolved, his sleep had significantly improved, and the constant pacing had begun to ease. However, he continued to experience nausea, neurological symptoms, body aches, and uncertainty about whether he would fully recover.
Despite that uncertainty, he says he wants to remain hopeful and ultimately become one of the difficult cases that improves and gives hope to others going through similar experiences. He also explains that he has remained off work while focusing on sleep, reducing stress, light exercise, and raising awareness.
His experience highlights an important concern surrounding persistent adverse effects reported by some patients after exposure to 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride and dutasteride.
While many individuals use these medications without apparent long-term problems, some patients report persistent sexual, physical, neurological, or psychological symptoms after discontinuation. These experiences are often discussed under the broader term Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS), although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and there is currently no reliable way to predict who may develop persistent symptoms.
This testimony is part of Moral Medicine’s ongoing effort to document patient experiences, give affected individuals a platform to share what happened to them, and raise awareness surrounding persistent adverse effects after commonly prescribed medications.
