Aulanko has been a popular destination with visitors for more than a hundred years. The forest park of Aulanko, its sights, and the view from the scenic lookout tower of Aulangonvuori Hill over the national landscape attract more than 400 000 visitors every year. Thousand years ago an ancient hillfort (linnavuori) stood on top of Aulangonvuori. It had been built by Finnish Häme tribe (aka. Tavastians) as part of a chain of defensive forts. Some kind of hillfort and cult place is also presumed to been there since the beginning of Common Era. The hillfort was demolished during the Second Swedish Crusade after mid 13th century. The English-style park, which forms a part of the nature reserve, was constructed in 1883 - 1938 and, with its buildings and cultural history, it is a nationally valuable site. In 1907 an observation tower designed by Waldemar Aspelin was built to the Aulangonvuori hill.
