Solite Spirits is a classic arcade shoot 'em up that was developed by Team Muhaha, and published to arcades by Japanese arcade production company Promat in 1999. The game's design was thought to have been heavily influenced by Psikyo's classic Strikers Shmup series; so much so that developers at Oriental Soft re-released an updated, completely renamed version a year later in 2000 called "1945K III", in likely, yet obvious reference to Psikyo's "Strikers 1945 III." Each of the game's 8 fighter jets have their own unique shot types, charge-based attacks, and special attacks respectively. When it comes to weapons, this is where the game shines. The fighter jets have some unique abilities, such as the ability to freeze all enemies on the screen, or launch satellite airships and homing missiles, as well as execute screen devouring bombing raids from massively oversized jets. While the screen freezing ability may seem cool, the downside here is that it doesn't actually do any damage to enemies; it rather just freezes them all in place, giving you a few seconds of an open window to fire at will. Likewise, some ships are faster than others, and some have more powerful weapons it seems. They certainly don't all feel equally balanced either, but the unique abilities of each ship makes the game worth playing. Its sequel, 1945K III was even more stunning, thanks in part to the addition of new weapons and more jets. Despite the similarities with 1945K III, both games have slightly different stage background scenes. Solite Spirits has city street views with skyscrapers that aren't seen in Oriental Soft's 1945K III version. Although, both games do share many of the same scenes, such as the Mars stage where you battle aliens, or the outer space battle in an asteroid belt. Scoring in the game is largely dependent on picking up bars, 7's, and fruit dropped by defeated enemies. The icons will fall below the screen if you fail to pick them up in time. This is in contrast to the P (Power) icons, which float aimlessly up and down the entire screen until you manage to grab them.
