China’s debt is expanding at a remarkable pace — but what does that actually mean for the Chinese economy, global markets and the wider de-dollarization narrative? According to an International Finance report based on Institute of International Finance (IIF) data, China’s overall debt increased by more than $4.8 trillion in the first half of 2026, taking total outstanding debt to approximately $72.5 trillion. The increase includes borrowing across governments, financial institutions, companies and households. The bigger question is not simply how much China can borrow, but what that borrowing is producing. China’s economy is around the $20 trillion scale, while IMF data puts China’s projected 2026 real GDP growth around 4.5–4.6%. IMF analysis also projects China’s augmented debt — including local government financing vehicles and other off-budget government funds — at 135.3% of GDP in 2026, rising further in subsequent years under its baseline projections. That creates a critical economic question: Is additional borrowing generating enough productive economic activity, cash flow and returns to justify the additional leverage? This video examines China’s debt explosion, the property-sector slowdown, local-government liabilities, corporate leverage, debt productivity and the growing debate around China’s economic model. It also examines a major claim frequently made in the de-dollarization debate: Does a declining role for the US dollar automatically mean greater economic sustainability for China? The answer requires separating two different issues. De-dollarization and debt sustainability are not the same thing. A country can increase the use of its own currency in international trade and financial transactions while simultaneously dealing with high domestic leverage, weak property markets, local-government debt and diminishing returns from additional borrowing. The video also examines the analytical scenario of approximately $10 trillion in additional debt versus roughly $1 trillion in additional annual GDP. This is used as a debt-productivity illustration, not as an official forecast of China’s future borrowing or GDP. The IMF has separately highlighted China's rising leverage and projected augmented debt trajectory, while noting the importance of addressing local-government and corporate vulnerabilities. The real question for 2026 is therefore: How much more debt can China accumulate before diminishing returns, property weakness, local-government liabilities and declining debt productivity become major constraints on growth? In this episode, we break down the numbers behind China’s debt explosion and examine what they could mean for China, the yuan, de-dollarization, global markets and the international financial system.
