Role of reproductive isolation in Speciation Any factor which prevents the interbreeding between even the related groups of living organisms is called an isolating mechanism, while the phenomenon of inability of living organisms to interbreed is called reproductive isolation. According to Meyer (1942), reproductive isolating mechanisms are the biological properties of individuals which prevent the inter-reeding of naturally sympatric populations. Significance Reproductive isolation is must because : It maintains the distinctiveness of characters of different species. It helps in accumulation of variations leading to speciation. In the absence of it, these variants may freely interbreed leading to disappearance of differences between them. It divides a population into sub-populations, which will differ significantly from ancestral population. So reproductive isolation helps in speciation.
