You had a plan for this year. Then life took a different road, and you have been arguing with it ever since.
If that sounds familiar, this video is for you. Lao Tzu and Zhuangzi, the two great teachers of Taoism, spent their lives watching how people wear themselves out fighting what has already happened. They had a name for another way: wu wei. It means taking the road that life has actually opened, and spending your strength there instead of on the road that closed. You keep your goals. You put down the argument.
Along the way, you will hear some old stories: a cook whose knife stayed sharp for nineteen years, a man who sang at his wife's funeral, a wheelwright who could not teach his own son, and a Zen master who answered every accusation with the same two words. You will also find a few simple practices to try this week, including a one-minute breath and a small evening habit.
This video is made in the style of sand animation: slow, quiet drawings that appear in the sand one grain at a time. The pictures are calm by themselves, so feel free to put it on in the evening, pour a cup of tea and let it play.
If it spoke to you, tell us in the comments which city you are watching from, and leave one word: River.
And if you know someone who has spent this year arguing with a closed road, send them this video. They may need it more than they will say.
Next, watch: How to Stay Calm When You Are Afraid of What Is Coming. It is waiting in the top left corner at the end of this video.
