If you enlisted before 1980, there is a good chance you were exposed to something the VA now presumes made you sick. Agent Orange. The water at Camp Lejeune. Atmospheric radiation. Asbestos in older ships and buildings. You do not have to prove the connection for a presumed condition, and the list of what counts got longer in the last few years. A denial you received a decade ago does not mean anything under the rules that exist today. Nobody at the VA is going to call and tell you that. It sits there and waits to see if you ask. In this one I go through what your service dates actually unlock, which conditions the VA presumes are connected, how those conditions stack toward the top of the rate table, and the one form that protects your effective date while you build the claim. A NOTE ON THE NUMBER The figure named in the title is the published monthly rate at 100 percent for a veteran with no dependents. Almost nobody reaches it on one condition.
