A night out in Wedela, near Carletonville, ended in tragedy when armed gunmen opened fire at a tavern in Extension 3 on Saturday night, 26 September 2026. The latest police update says the death toll has risen to 18, while at least 18 other people were injured. Five of the injured victims are reportedly in critical condition. Police say the attackers were armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols and opened fire on patrons both outside and inside the tavern. The suspects allegedly searched some patrons and took their cellphones before fleeing in two vehicles, which were later set alight. Police are investigating: • 18 counts of murder • 18 counts of attempted murder • 2 counts of malicious damage to property • Armed robbery A multidisciplinary police team has been established, involving murder and robbery detectives, Crime Intelligence and Crime Scene Investigation. Operation Prosper has also been deployed in Wedela and surrounding areas. But many questions remain unanswered. Why was this tavern targeted? Was this a robbery, retaliation or something more organised? Could the attack be connected to an earlier shooting at the same tavern? And what, if anything, is the connection to the ongoing illegal-mining-related violence in the broader West Rand? At this stage, the motive and identities of the perpetrators remain under investigation. We will separate what police have confirmed from information that remains unverified. Most importantly, behind the number 18 are 18 human beings, 18 families and 18 stories. This is SA Uncovered. 💬 What do you think investigators should be looking at in this case?
