Pulkovo Flight 612: The Deadly Climb Into a Storm

On August 22, 2006, Pulkovo Flight 612 took off from Anapa, Russia, heading to Saint Petersburg. On board were 170 people, including 45 children. What began as a routine flight soon became one of the most harrowing aviation disasters in Russian history. As the Tupolev Tu-154M climbed toward its cruising altitude, a severe storm stood in its path. Despite warnings, the experienced crew decided to ascend further, unknowingly entering the so-called "Coffin Corner"—a dangerous zone at high altitude where aircraft performance margins are razor-thin. This video reconstructs the chain of events that led to the fatal loss of control, including the misinterpretations, poor coordination, and training gaps that sealed the fate of everyone on board. We analyze the black box data, the storm's meteorological details, and the aircraft’s final movements before it disintegrated near Sukhaya Balka, Ukraine. Watch this gripping breakdown of how a storm, human decisions, and mechanical limitations collided with devastating consequences.
