Past fifty, you can still carry your own boxes out to the car. These strong years are the best time to
downsize, while every choice is still yours and not your children's.
If you have tried to declutter before and given up, it was never laziness. You were taught a method
nobody can finish: deciding about one thing at a time inside a full closet. In this video I share the
Japanese way that works instead, from seiri and seiton to the small room in my childhood home that was
emptied and refilled every single day.
What you will learn
Why you should empty a space completely before you decide anything
The one question to ask about every object: will I use this in the life I'm starting now?
Why a whole room beats you, and why one piece of furniture won't
Seiri and seiton: choosing first, putting away second
Seizen seiri: the Japanese idea of sorting your life while you are living it
Why waiting makes it harder: your body, falls, money and your children
The easy-to-hard order: start with the bathroom, leave the photographs for last
The four-box method and the taped box with a date on the lid
How much space your memories should get, and giving things away while you can tell their story
Measuring your next home, and planning the move around your reason

Facts mentioned
About 1 in 4 adults aged 65 and older falls each year (CDC, Older Adult Falls Data).
The average 10x10 self-storage unit in the US rents for about $75 a month (SpareFoot, February 2026).
Over ten years that is about $9,000.
Japan's Home Appliance Recycling Law (in force since April 2001): owners pay a recycling fee when they
throw away a refrigerator, TV, air conditioner or washing machine.
Tell me in the comments: which space are you going to empty first this week?
