Some 1,900 years ago, at a fort on the cold northern edge of the Roman Empire, someone sent a soldier socks, sandals and underpants, and the letter survived. The Vindolanda tablets, thin wooden letters and reports dug out of the mud since 1973, let us rebuild one ordinary day at a Roman fort around AD 100, from dawn to dark: the morning report, a strength report of 752 men, 343 men in the workshops, a grain dealer worried about bad roads, a cavalry officer with no beer, and a birthday invitation that is almost certainly the earliest known writing in Latin by a woman.

⚠️ "Vitalis" is a fictional composite character created for this video. He is not a real person named in any record. His day is reconstructed from the Vindolanda tablets and the archaeology of the site. Every quotation comes from a real tablet (published translations, Tab. Vindol. / RIB Online). The other people named in the video are real writers or recipients of the tablets; their faces are imagined.
