Heart of Darkness by VBT Sega Xtreme 2026 Homebrew Competition

This entry to the Sega Xtreme 31st Anniversary Saturn Homebrew contest is a Port of Heart of Darkness (PC version) by VBT. Recorded from real hardware. I had varying results. There are 2 versions, one with and one without FMVs. The FMVs weren't running well on my Saturn but it was fine off the Saroo. so this footage is off both Saroo and CD, covering both versions. Output via an RGB SCART cable, I used both the upscaler and the OSSC and recorded with a USB capture device. The results are similar but I feel this sort of 2D renders game comes out slightly better through the cheap upscaler due to the interpolation between frames. Gameplay The game is a 2D sidescrolling platform/action game with puzzle elements. This port runs very well so the gameplay of the original is intact. Graphics This is a stunning port. its output at very high res, the animated backgrounds are gorgeous and the rendered 2D sprites are animated to perfection. As this is a port of the PC version we have a very high fidelity experience here, Sound This is an early build so there's no sound yet. Overall Its a really great experience, even at this early stage. There's still bugs to iron out, I had a few freezes and, as mentioned earlier, the FMV version doesnt seem to load properly on my saturn, though that could also be my laser, but yet again, VBT is delivering extremely high quality work porting games to the Saturn.
