You get up for a glass of water. Soft thump behind you. Yep, the cat's up too. It isn't hungry and it doesn't want to play, it just has to be wherever you are, apparently. So how does an animal with a reputation for not caring end up trailing you around like a small furry shadow?
Turns out it starts about ten thousand years ago, with grain stores, a lot of mice and some wildcats that more or less tamed themselves. From there: kitten habits that never switched off, a 2019 study where cats bonded with their owners about as often as human babies do, cats picking a person over food (food came second!), the mental map your cat keeps of where you are in the house, territory and why closed doors drive them nuts, and the boring practical stuff too, like food, routine, warmth and plain boredom. And yes, the bathroom thing. Plus when a cat that suddenly won't leave your side might be telling you something's wrong.
