Operation: Vanity

“Operation: Vanity” is a tongue-in-cheek look at how vainglory can attach itself to genuinely good actions and how even good intentions can become mixed with the desire to admire ourselves or be admired by others. Vanity plays the gentleman spy, slipping into acts of charity, quiet prayer, and worthwhile work with a suggestion: make sure somebody notices. He’s happy to go along with the good we do, provided he can turn our attention toward the applause. He’ll even congratulate us on how humble we are. With playful storytelling and comic-book visuals, the song explores how the desire for recognition can intrude upon the desire to serve. The gift can still feed the hungry; the prayer can still be sincere. But the question remains: are we seeking recognition in a way that serves the good—or has human approval begun to matter more than God’s? Concept and lyrics by Nickolas Hein.
