From a home kitchen in the 1930s to a West Coast empire, and finally to a heartbreaking split between a shrinking restaurant chain and a multi-billion-dollar grocery brand, this is the untold story of Marie Callender’s. Discover how a working family's legendary talent for scratch-made pie crust built an iconic American restaurant chain—and how decades of leveraged buyouts, corporate mergers, bankruptcy, and a massive trademark sale ultimately tore the name away from the actual ovens. Today, while dozens of grocery stores stock frozen meals bearing her face, fewer than two dozen restaurants remain where real pies are still baked fresh daily. Watch to uncover the full history behind America's favorite Sunday dinner icon.
Summary of the Story
Marie Callender started baking pies from home in the 1930s to make extra household income, eventually supplying local delis across Southern California.
In 1948, Marie, her husband Cal, and their son Don sold their only car for $700 to fund a proper wholesale bakery inside a World War II Quonset hut.
Don opened the first Marie Callender's pie and coffee shop in Orange, California, in 1964, famously offering free slices and coffee to hook first-time customers.
By 1986, the chain had grown to roughly 120 locations across the American West, leading the family to sell the business to Ramada for over $80 million.
A series of corporate takeovers, leveraged buyouts, and heavy debt loads followed, including a turbulent merger with Perkins and subsequent bankruptcy filings in 2011 and 2019.
During the 2011 bankruptcy, the Marie Callender's trademark was sold outright to ConAgra for $57.5 million, legally separating the frozen food brand from the physical restaurant chain.
Today, only about 23 restaurants survive under Elite Restaurant Group, still baking pies from scratch daily, while Conagra Brands controls the nationwide frozen food and grocery line.
