The afternoon sun stretches across the earth floor of the doma, comes in through the lattice window, falls as a column of light under the high beams, and finally leans toward evening on the veranda. Seventeen short pieces by Fauré, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Bach and Burgmüller, taken at the speed of a cafe rather than a concert hall. The seventeen play twice; the second time is three percent slower and one decibel quieter. There is no pianist here. Every note comes from the score and is sounded one at a time from recorded samples of a single grand piano. The tempo is relaxed, the top of each chord is brought forward and the inner voices held back, the pedal is allowed to ring a little past the key release, and the reverb is kept short — the size of a room with an earth floor, not a hall.
