Everyone talks about the importance of downstrokes for gypsy jazz guitar playing, but I don't recall ever seeing anything about upstrokes, and they're important too. My picking used to lacked clarity, and especially turned to half-picked mush at higher speeds ... here are some things I've found that have helped fix it.
These are all draft ideas, and you should really work with a teacher, but perhaps this will give you some ideas for your own work.
Best wishes and good luck!
ps - reviewing my own vid, it's a bit muddled, so some timestamps of interest:
01:40 - pick angle -- keep the pick flat to the string, no slicing
02:40 - "rest strokes" on the high E string to make sure that your downstrokes are wide and loose
03:30 - swung 8ths, with downstrokes on the strong beat
03:40 - swung 8th notes, with upstrokes on the strong beat -- this is kind of the point of the video (sorry for the disorganized content)
