Railway Comes to Aizawl: PM to Inaugurate Bairabi–Sairang Line, Launch Mizoram’s First Vande Bharat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the newly completed Bairabi–Sairang railway line shortly, and is also slated to flag off the first-ever Vande Bharat Express for Mizoram. Reporting from the scenic Aizawl Peak Resort Skywalk, NewsStation Editor Siddhartha described the development as a transformative step for the region. “This connection will significantly boost trade, tourism, and accessibility, bringing Mizoram closer to the rest of India,” he noted. The 50.38-km broad gauge line extends from Bairabi in Kolasib district to Sairang, just 20 km from Aizawl. It forms part of Indian Railways’ ambitious mission to link all northeastern state capitals with the national railway grid under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone. Constructed across one of India’s most challenging terrains — with dense forests, high mountains, and deep gorges — the route features 142 bridges (including 55 major ones), 23 tunnels, and four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. Among its engineering marvels is Mizoram’s tallest railway pier near Sairang, standing at 104 meters, surpassing Delhi’s Qutub Minar by 42 meters. The project's construction cost, initially estimated at ₹2,384 crore, has escalated over phases to approximately ₹8,605 crore, highlighting the logistical and engineering complexity of building railways in the region.
