For the past few years, podcasts have been one of the biggest ways I've learned about Black history.
Books are obviously important, but there's something different about hearing historians, educators, and storytellers actually talk through the people, events, and ideas that shaped the Black experience.
A lot of what I know today came from lessons from family and teachers, and simply putting on a podcast and listening.
So in this video, I wanted to share some of the podcasts that have helped me learn more about Black history, Black culture, race, and the stories that often get left out of the history books.
These aren't just podcasts about dates and famous names.
They helped me understand the bigger picture, things like slavery and resistance, the Civil Rights Movement, Black contributions to American history, the role of race in everyday life, and the stories of people whose contributions deserve to be remembered.
That said, here are the four podcasts I recommend:
🎙️ Teaching Hard History — hosted by Hasan Kwame Jeffries
🎙️ Carved in Ebony — hosted by Jasmine Holmes & Abena Ansah-Wright
🎙️ Why Race Matters — hosted by Angela Fitzgerald
🎙️ TheGrio Daily — from TheGrio
If you're trying to learn more about Black history but don't know where to start, I hope these give you a few places to begin.
And if you have a podcast that has taught you something about Black history that you think I should listen to, let me know in the comments.
