(RIBONUCLEIC ACID: RNA)
Ribonucleic Acid: RNA
Occurrence
RNA is synthesized in the nucleus. Only some RNA is contained within ribosomes, but most RNA exists freely in the cytoplasm. The amount of DNA in a cell is constant, but the amount of RNA is not constant because thousands of copies of RNA molecules are being made all the time. RNA molecules participate in the synthesis of polypeptide chains in the cytoplasm.
Composition of Ribonucleic Acid
(Composition of Ribonucleic Acid)
Like DNA, RNA molecules are polymers made of four types of nucleotide monomers. The number of nucleotides in RNA molecules ranges from 70 to 12,000.
There are three types of RNA.
For protein synthesis, cells transcribe the following three types of ribonucleic acids (RNA):
1. Messenger RNA (mRNA)
2. Transfer RNA (tRNA)
3. Ribosomal RNA (iRNA)
Messenger RNA (mRNA)
These are all explained in detail.
