The Worst Music Visualizer

I decided to try something a bit different this time: building a very useless music visualizer from spare parts in my wreck box, no microcontroller, no ADC. But how do you turn an analog audio signal into something digital without an ADC? — I explore amplification, clipping, and rectification, before landing on a chain of SN74HC595 shift registers to turn loudness into light.
