Why did humans lose most of their body hair? Humans are mammals, yet compared with other primates, we have very little thick visible body fur. Instead, most of our skin is covered by tiny vellus hairs, while thicker hair remains on places such as the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. So what happened to the fur-covered ancestors of modern humans? In this video, we explore the evolution of human body hair and the leading explanations for why humans became much less heavily furred. The strongest evidence discussed here connects reduced body hair with thermoregulation: humans have a high density of eccrine sweat glands across much of the skin, allowing evaporation to remove heat while the body remains active. We look at the relationship between body hair, sweating, heat loss, human evolution, and endurance in hot environments. We also examine why scientists cannot simply point to a fossil and identify the exact moment humans lost their fur, and how researchers reconstruct the story using anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, and thermal models. But heat is not the only idea. This video also explores the parasite hypothesis, sexual and social selection, and the aquatic hypothesis, while separating popular explanations from the evidence that can actually be tested. And there is a strange detail hiding on your own body: you are not actually hairless. Millions of hair follicles remain across your skin, but much of the hair they produce is fine and short rather than the thick coat seen in many other mammals. We also look at why humans kept scalp hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair in specific regions of the body — and why the human body may be better understood as a modified fur-bearing system rather than a completely hairless one. In this video: Why did humans lose body hair? Why don't humans have fur like other primates? How did sweating affect human evolution? What is the thermoregulation hypothesis? Why do humans have so many eccrine sweat glands? What happened to our ancestors' body fur? Why did humans keep scalp hair? Why do humans still have millions of hair follicles? What is the parasite hypothesis? What is the sexual selection hypothesis? What is the aquatic ape hypothesis? How do scientists study hair loss in human evolution? When did humans become less heavily furred? Your body still carries the machinery of an older hair system. Evolution did not simply switch hair off. It changed where hair grows, how it grows, and what role different regions play.
