Why is this pretty flower called the world’s worst weed? Water hyacinth, scientifically Pontederia crassipes (formerly Eichhornia crassipes), was reportedly given away as a souvenir at the 1884 World’s Fair in New Orleans, and today it’s on the list of the world’s 100 worst invasive species. In this calming episode of The Flower Encyclopedia, we explore how a floating plant from the Amazon doubles its population in as little as two weeks and ends up covering entire lakes, including about 77 square miles of Lake Victoria.
We also look at its three-form tristylous flowers, the yellow spot that guides bees, what happens to the water underneath a thick mat, the weevils used to control it, how people use it for weaving and compost, and practical and legal notes on why growing it is banned in many places.
Sit back, relax, and let this gentle documentary journey through the science and history of the water hyacinth play in the background — perfect as calming, ambient content to unwind, study, or fall asleep to.
