Japanese Tea Ceremony with Sokou Udagawa Ep.2 | The Man Who Never Meant to Teach Tea

He had no intention of teaching tea. Then his teacher died the day before the autumn gathering. Sokou Udagawa learned tea before he could have chosen it. The head of the Shino school of incense and tea visited his grandmother often, and at two or three he was already imitating the movements, staying for the banquet afterward, pouring sake for the adults because they made a fuss of him for it. His grandmother held a teaching licence in incense and never used it — she invited the people she liked and enjoyed it on her own terms, a sukisha in the old sense. He assumed he would do the same, and kept tea at arm's length: a university tea club, a teacher named Hori who opened up the world of utensils, a part-time job at the Nezu Museum, and a career that was supposed to stay administrative. Then his teacher was given a terminal diagnosis with a tea gathering still on the calendar, the students were divided among several teachers to cover the gap, and the day before the gathering the teacher died. The doubt about teaching while still learning was answered later, at Shogen-in in Daitokuji, by Izumida Rōshi: two people swimming together may reach the shore that neither reaches alone.
