🐂 WHAT IS THE CATTLE TRIAL?
The Cattle Trial, also called the Cow Test, showcases the roots of Working Equitation as a sport developed from the traditions of horses and riders working livestock.
In this phase, competitors must demonstrate their horse’s ability to confidently and effectively work cattle.
Each rider is assigned a specific numbered cow and must separate that animal from the herd and move it into a designated area.
It sounds simple — until you put a determined cow into the equation!
The horse must be responsive, agile and confident, while the rider needs excellent timing, positioning and an ability to anticipate the movement of the cattle.
Unlike the precision of Dressage or the obstacle courses of Ease of Handling and Speed, the Cattle Trial introduces something completely unpredictable:
The cow! 🐂
No two runs are exactly alike.
Horse and rider must react instantly as the cow changes direction, attempts to return to the herd or challenges the rider’s ability to keep it separated.
At the World Championship, the Cattle Trial is also an important team competition, with riders representing their nations and working toward their country’s overall championship result.
The 2026 World Championship demonstrated just how challenging this phase can be. Only a small number of combinations successfully completed the test with a classified result.
