David Joseph | Scheherezade | Score Video

Written in 1999 for the Zagreb Soloists at the invitation of the 20th Music Biennale Zagreb, Scheherezade is a study for a small string orchestra inspired by an imagined Eastern and Slavic sound world. The work draws on evocative orchestral color and imagery associated with the romance and exoticism of the East, with references to the musical world of Rimsky-Korsakov. Scored for small string orchestra, with the possibility of an expanded string ensemble, it highlights David Joseph’s strong interest in texture, color, and expressive writing for strings. This video presents a live performance by the Zagreb Soloists at the Zagreb Biennale in April 1999.
