All five daughters-in-law are still asleep. Jamuna (70): (Loudly) Hey, daughters-in-law! Are you planning to wake up only when the sun is right overhead? In my day, we used to wake up so early that we’d be the ones waking up the rooster! Bindiya: (Mumbling in her sleep) Grandma, tell the rooster to take the day off today. We’ll do the crowing instead! Saroj: (Waking Bindiya up) Hush! If Grandma hears you, she’ll finish us off along with the rooster! Narration: The five daughters-in-law quickly come outside. Jamuna Devi inspects each one of them. Jamuna (70): Saroj, you prepare the puja (worship) tray. Pooja, clean the shrine. Bindiya, water the tulsi plant. Rani, get breakfast ready—and Chinu, massage my feet! Chinu: (Surprised) Grandma, why do the other four get the household chores, while I’m stuck massaging your feet? Jamuna (70): Because you’re the youngest! Chinu: (Under her breath) Then I should have been given the ‘smallest’ task, not the most long-drawn-out one! Saroj: Chinu, shh… Narration: Saroj hushes her. Just then, Gayatri emerges from her room. Gayatri (45): (Authoritatively) Hey, leave all of that for later! "I’d like some Poha, Upma, and ginger tea prepared for me today." Jamuna (70, angrily): "Daughter-in-law! Prayers first, then the kitchen. This isn't a hotel!" Gayatri (45, testily): "Ma-ji, people these days don't visit the deity on an empty stomach; they have breakfast first!" Jamuna (70, sarcastically): "No need to introduce your new-fangled customs in front of me... things weren't done this way in our generation." Bindiya (under her breath): "Good Lord! Soon, we’ll probably need a token just to catch a glimpse of you!" Narration: The five daughters-in-law exchange glances and get to work. Rani prepares Poha, Pooja makes Upma, and Saroj prepares a breakfast—free of onion and garlic—for the matriarch. Just then, the matriarch enters... Jamuna (70): "Rani! Why did you add so many curry leaves to the Poha? And keep the salt low; my blood pressure spikes otherwise." Gayatri (45): "Oh, Ma-ji, surely taste matters too! Rani, add some namkeen (savory snack mix) on top of my portion of Poha." Jamuna (70, angrily): "Don't you dare add any namkeen in front of me!" Gayatri (45, testily): "I’m adding it to my Poha—it’s not like I’m putting it into your mouth!" Jamuna (70): "Don't you have any shame, carrying on like this in front of your own daughter-in-law..." Narration: An argument breaks out between the two. Just then, Chinu arrives with the Upma. Chinu (innocently): "Here you go, Ma-ji—your Upma." Gayatri (45, after tasting it): "Why is there so little chili in this?" Jamuna (70, after tasting it): "It’s perfect! At least someone listened to me." Chinu (softly): "Ma-ji, should I add the chili to your portion, or take some out from Dadi-sa’s portion?" Narration: Bindiya tries to hold back her laughter but ends up coughing. Just then, Jagdish enters the kitchen. Jagdish (50): (Happily) Wow! Three different dishes for breakfast today! It’s like I’ve hit the jackpot! Bindiya: (Wearily) It’s not your jackpot, Babuji—it’s ours! In the process of preparing three different breakfast items, we ended up going hungry ourselves! Jagdish (50): Oh, I see. Narration: Everyone sits down to have breakfast. A little while later, the doorbell rings. Jagdish opens the door to find Ritu standing there, dressed in modern attire, holding two large suitcases and a bag… Jagdish (50): (Happily) Well, look who’s here—Ritu! You’ve arrived! Come in, come in! Ritu (45): (Laughing) What could I do, Gattu? Repairs have started in my building, and the contractor says it will take at least a month. You were the one who said, "If you ever need anything,
