Listerine wasn't invented for your breath. It was created in 1879 as a surgical antiseptic, named after the father of antiseptic surgery. Then it was pitched for wounds, dandruff and stranger things, until an ad campaign made "halitosis" a household fear. This is how Listerine really started: a surgeon's name, a royalty that never ends, the word that sold a mouthwash, and the federal order that made it spend about $10 million admitting it couldn't stop a cold.
