Phaeton Bells and Pine Shadows on Büyükada — a summer midnight in 1962, and the quartet plays in a wooden pavilion among the stone pines above the Sea of Marmara, with the lights of Istanbul glittering across the water. The last ferry in from Sirkeci, phaeton bells climbing the hill, wooden mansions half hidden in the pines, paper lanterns hung from the eaves, mastic ice cream in tin bowls, a clarinet drifting out among the trees, the lights of Kadıköy far across the Marmara, bicycles leaning against the railing, the old tavern keeper raising his glass, Aya Yorgi dark on the summit, horses drinking at the stone trough, a poet from Cihangir leaning on the rail, the kanun beneath the wisteria, a night swim at Yörükali Bay, karşılama steps on the pavilion boards, the lodos moving through the pine needles, oud and clarinet at the pier café, the cicadas falling quiet at three — and the first ferry horn at dawn, with the pavilion still playing until morning. The set plays through twice, so put it on and leave it running. No talking, no ads inside the mix, no interruptions. Oud leads, with kanun, clarinet, upright bass, a light darbuka and the wind in the pines. No vocals.
