Ifugao is one of the minority groups in the northern mountains of the Philippines. Tangguyug is a water buffalo's horn used as a trumpet. In the early days, the Ifugao chief blew the Tangguyug to gather the villagers for important announcements. The composer based Tangguyug from Revelations 8:6 in the Tuwali Ifugao dialect. He took the four-note melodic structure from the Ifugao hudhud chant and assigned it to a soloist. In the composition, the word Tangguyug is presented in a manner that resembles the horn sound.
