Four chords — C, G, A minor and F — turn up in an absurd number of songs. This
video is about where they come from, and why one of the four is always minor.
No memorising chord charts. We start with a single major chord and count the
gaps inside it, discover that a major chord is one shape rather than a list of
notes, then find out that moving one finger by one key is the entire difference
between major and minor. From there we build all seven chords in the key of C
from nothing but the white keys and a rule about skipping notes — and the
major/minor pattern turns out not to be a rule at all, but a consequence of
where the semitones sit on a keyboard.
Then we play the famous four, reorder them, and rebuild the same progression in
G to show that the pattern belongs to the key, not to the letters.
Everything you hear is a real sampled piano, and every chord you see lit up is
the chord you're hearing.
