The first steel panels are going up in Hudspeth County, West Texas. But the biggest question in Big Bend is what has to happen around the wall: roads, power, communications, drainage, maintenance and access to a landscape people already depend on.
This Built Beyond documentary follows the engineering behind a remote border system, the distinction between tall walls and vehicle barriers, and the landowners and environmental groups challenging the work. The $46.55 billion figure is a national appropriation for barriers and supporting infrastructure. It is not the price of this 47-mile project.
Status checked on September 23, 2026. Big Bend 1 is under construction. A separate pause on ground-disturbing work for Big Bend 2 and 4 runs through September 30; it does not cover every project in the region. Published designs, schedules and litigation can change.
