Can the World Survive Without African Village Women? | Death and Healing This episode is part of my ongoing series, Can the World Survive Without African Village Women? In this episode, I discuss the impact of death and the different ways people respond to loss, grief, and mourning. I explore the important roles African village women play in death and mourning, including the ways they help usher the deceased into the ancestral realm and support families and communities through the process of grieving and healing. Drawing from African Indigenous Religions, I reflect on what African understandings of life, death, ancestors, community, and spirituality can teach us about death and healing. I also share why I did not post an episode last week. August 26 marked the 20th anniversary of my father, Done P. Dabale’s death, and I took time to honor and remember him. I reflect on how grief continues through the years and how individuals, families, and communities learn to live with loss. I engage the work of Laurenti Magesa, particularly African Religion: The Moral Traditions of Abundant Life, alongside my own experiences and observations to consider death not simply as an ending, but within African Indigenous understandings of the continuing relationship between the living, the deceased, the ancestors, and the community.
