Could Washington miss out on hundreds of millions of dollars in education scholarship funding? A dispute is escalating between Republican state Rep. Travis Couture and Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal over a federal education scholarship tax credit program. In an interview with The Center Square, Couture criticizes Reykdal's opposition to Washington participating in the program and reveals the superintendent's brief response to his eight-page letter. Reykdal previously urged Democratic Gov. Bob Ferguson not to opt Washington into the federal scholarship program, citing concerns about administrative costs, oversight and the potential implications for public and private education. Couture argues that Washington should participate, saying the program could expand educational opportunities for students and families through scholarship-granting organizations. According to supporters, the program could direct an estimated $700 million or more annually toward educational opportunities in Washington, including tutoring, special education, public school programs and private school scholarships. Couture disputes Reykdal's concerns about oversight costs, the use of scholarship funding at religious schools and the state's responsibilities under the program. The Republican lawmaker sent Reykdal an eight-page letter challenging his arguments. Reykdal's response, as shared in the report, was brief: "I got your letter. Thanks for expressing your feelings." Couture also questions whether opposition from the Washington Education Association, the state's teachers union, is influencing the debate. That is Couture's allegation, not an independently established explanation for Reykdal's position. The dispute now puts attention on Gov. Bob Ferguson and whether Washington will participate in the federal education scholarship tax credit program. IN THIS REPORT: Washington education scholarship tax credit controversy Rep.
