The Night Watch Was Cut Down. Here’s What Changed.

Rembrandt’s Night Watch is missing people—and not because they are hidden in shadow. In 1715, the canvas was cut down to fit its new home. An early copy lets us see what disappeared. Follow the captain’s hand, its shadow, the luminous girl and the drummer, then compare the surviving painting with Gerrit Lundens’s copy.
