Rain on corrugated metal — and underneath it, for the first time, the coop stayed dry. This was the week the roofs came before everything else. The chicken coop had been leaking since spring: a finger's width of overlap where there should have been more. The goat run lies almost flat, and the wood beneath had rotted where the water stood. And the trailer, which has no roof of its own on a farm with seven of them, finally got one made of timber and canvas. On Tuesday there were figs, ripening at 800 metres, which nobody here could have imagined when I was a boy. On Thursday it rained again, and everything held.
