"Kaarto" is a term from Lapland referring to a "hassock," a clump of wet grass found on a damp mire, which absorbs minerals, channeling them deep into the earth where they break down in the soil.
This live recording features a clip from my chamber music quintet piece, "Viiankiaapa, Cantus Borealis" (2023/24), for soloists and live electronics.
The composition explores the natural elements of Viiankiaapa, a bog mire in northern Lapland, my homeland. Through this piece, I reflect on the profound impact that Viiankiaapa has had on my development and the awareness it has instilled in me as I’ve grown into adulthood.
